You may have heard this before. Or maybe you haven’t.
Either way, it’s a summary.
… of the 3 things you need to do, to become an amazing copywriter who consistently writes pieces that are explosively successful… AND who maintains their status as “top notch” copywriter.
It’s about as good a summary as I’ve seen.
And if you’re even THINKING of thinking of trying to get better at copywriting, here is THE way forward for you.
What?
This:
“Ground yourself in the true fundamentals of marketing…heighten your awareness of what’s working NOW…and continually capture ideas, headlines, thoughts, techniques, etc.” -Gary Halbert (One of the greatest ever copywriters)
See?
3 things.
(1) Learn the fundamentals. And here’s my addition to Gary’s advice: continually remind yourself of the fundamentals. Don’t just read through Claude Hopkins’ Scientific Advertising once, and assume that you’ve “got it.” Read through it once a year. Personally, I read through one of Gary Bencivenga’s “Marketing Bullets” (go google them if you don’t know what they are) once every day. As a continual reminder to myself of the fundamentals.
(2) Educate yourself on the tactics that are working NOW. i.e. Figure out all the latest and coolest techniques on how to up your webinar response. And how to get people to show up to your webinars. And don’t always poo-poo (as I’m personally prone to doing) the people who talk about some awesome new technique they discovered for getting Facebook Ads to convert twice as much. At least listen to them… weigh their “discoveries” against your knowledge of the fundamentals… try it out… and if it works, awesome. It may not work a year from now. But at least it works now.
(3) Always be looking for new “hooks,” and inspiration for your copy. When you’re watching movies. When you’re reading books. When you’re walking around your neighborhood. When you’re talking with friends. Keep a notebook handy, or a place in your phone where you can jot thoughts down. Great hooks for copy don’t always come when you want or expect them to. So be prepared for the moments when you’re NOT expecting them… but they come in a flash.
And then, you will become (and remain) a truly great copywriter.
